New computer advice

Post by Rapitiss »

Azrox is looking to purchase a new computer so I'm posting here for him. If anyone finds better deals please update.

First: Quick run down of key computer parts.

1. CPU : Faster is better.
- AMD = price and speed advantage highly recommend over intel for budget gaming machine.
- EQ is single threaded and the characters, pets, etc you ask it to render the more work you do.
- Should consider CPU's with 4,6 or 8 cores. While you may not need them today having extras helps when you decide to load up an extra EQ account, watch netflix, etc.
- 3 Ghz is sweet spot.

2. GPU : "Graphics Card"
- Two major players are NVIDA and AMD. I've been using NVidia but they cost a little more
- GTX 1650 - Much better than nothing but still kind of low end
- RTX 2060 - This adds about $150 but is MUCH faster ( if you want to keep machine 5yr+ ... )

3. Storage : HD vs SSD
- HD = Hard Drive - good old spinning magnetic drive. Large capacity. Good reliability. Good Price. But slow
- SSD = Solid State Drive - Small capacity - some reliability issues - most are way faster than HD's.
- there is a wide variety in the type of SSD's pre-built computers come with. Some are barely better than HD's and it can be tough to tll the difference.
- Entry level drives are 256 GB which is ok if all you do is EQ. otherwise really want to get 512

-------------------------

The $500-$600 PC is going to cut corners by using low end components.
The $750 PC is going to offer the GTX 1650 and small SSD
There are a couple $1000+ machines that have the GTX 2060 and 512 SSD which is really offer a nice boost in performance.

If you are planning to keep the machine for 5+ yrs its likely worth the extra scratch

I found this one:

https://www.newegg.com/abs-computer-tec ... 6883102994

From what I can tell,

Pros:
$50 less
Comes with mouse and keyboard
600w 80+ Gold (vs 500w 80+)

Cons:
Intel CPU (similar performance, more power draw)
RTX 2060 (vs 2060 Super)
Unknown ram speed (although intel CPUs are less sensitive to ram speed than Ryzen)

AMD 3600 - 3.6 x 6 core (boost 4.2)
Intel 10400 - 2.9 x 6 core (boost 4.3)

I'd rather give AMD the win. Higher steady state and Intel missed the boat on their CPU's.

Both PSU are more than enough.

Didn't check out the different flavors for the GPU to see which is better. Both are 2060's which are so much better than at 1650

Next challenge is to find something in the 650-800 range if $1K is too big of a step for Azrox.

^^That was the best I found in the $500-$750 price range. Still get a ryzen 3600, still get 512gb ssd, but you only have 8gb DDR4 and a 1650 (which is still enough for EQ).

EDIT:

Looks like that one is only 1 ram stick, which means you are getting half the memory bandwidth. Good news is quality 16gb ram kits are inexpensive:

depending on location i can and i know several others in guild can help build one if he desides to build a DIY vs prebuilt. right now AMD cpu is best bang for buck id recomend the Ryzen 5 2600 ( 6 core cpu at 3.4ghz with 3.9 max boost ) aprox 140$ , min 8gig ram DDR4 32000 or faster, dont know much about Nvidia but for AMD GPU on the cheep end is RX580 aprox 150$ it will run EQ just fine and even box a few toons but does not compare to the newer cards, is = to the older GTX 1060 nividia card , best performance bang for buck is to most definatly get an SSD !!!!! you canb find SATA 3 connedted 2.5" 1TB SSD's for around 100$ now and thats plenty big enough you can acctuly get by with a much smaller SSD as well depending on what all you want installed on it just windows and EQ + any 3rd part App's 100gig would work.

Checking out GPU benchmarks

GTX 1650 - baseline
AMD RX 580 +39%
RTX 2060 + 93%
AMD RX 5700 +116%
RTX 2060 super +118%

----------------------------------

Any of the machines listed at $1k are all pretty nice.

If you can't swing that the $800 one zargut listed would be my 2nd choice: It has the good solid CPU, RAM, SSD. The $200 difference is in the GPU which is still going to be good.

I'm not sure about the Dell. You can get away with no SSD but it really makes the computers feel sluggish. Once you've felt the difference its hard to go back.

Yeah I have to concur with Rapi. The $1k machines are all close enough that its preference, but Zargut found the best out of the box machine for $800 or less.

This is about the cheapest 6core I could find. You could add ram later, even upgrade videocard when on sale, but for me the bottleneck is always cpu.

PC - AMD Ryzen 5 2600 (6-Core, 3.40 GHz), AMD Radeon RX 580 4 GB, 8 GB DDR4, 500 GB SSD, Wi-Fi, VR Ready, Windows 10 Home 64-bit. ($699.99)

Also dont forget about craigslist. Ive seen decent systems you could always lowball and hope someone bites.
