What is GINA, and why do we have to use it?

What is GINA?

When you type the command /log on in EverQuest, every line of text that you see is saved to a log file on your computer.

If you're curious, even lines that go to minimized chat windows are saved to the log file. The file is named eqlog_Charactername_bertox.txt (with your character's name substituted in), and it's found in the Logs folder inside your EverQuest folder.

GINA is a program you install on your computer that monitors this log file and looks at each new line that is saved to it by EverQuest.

You can receive (or create your own!) sets of "Triggers" which instruct GINA to watch for specific words or phrases in the lines of text coming from EQ and do something - like popping up a text message on your screen or speaking to you through your computer speakers - when it finds a match.

As a very simple example, you could have a trigger that looks for the text "You feel yourself starting to appear." and speaks "Invis is wearing off!" through your speakers when GINA sees it.

Why do we have to use it?

There are many posts to these forums that tell us we must install and use GINA before raiding with ES. But why?

EQ is a complicated game with a lot going on during many raids and a lot of text scrolling by. Yes, some emotes in raids pop up green text in the middle of your screen. Yes, you can create separate chat windows and filter certain types of messages into them. But it's still far too easy to miss important messages in a hectic raid.

The GINA program is a huge help with this, and also adds additional features that can come in very handy, such as countdown timers.

In short, while there's a bit of hassle getting this program installed and set up (which this set of forum posts will hopefully help with), at the end of the day it helps reduce stress on raids while improving your performance. Hopefully, you'll enjoy raiding more, and the guild will be more successful overall.

By the way, GINA is completely "legal" for use. It only monitors the log file created by the EverQuest game - it doesn't modify anything in the game itself, so it complies with Daybreak/Darkpaw Games' EULA.

Downloading and Installing GINA

1. Click "Download GINA" on the GINA Download Page:

Image

2. Depending on your computer's settings, the GINA installer may automatically download, or you may see a window similar to the following asking you to choose where you want to save it. If you are asked to choose a location, try to remember where on your computer you saved it!

Image

3. Depending on the web browser you use (I used Google Chrome for this walkthrough), you may see a bar at the bottom of the window telling you that the download is complete. In Chrome, I first clicked on the arrow pointing down (circled in red), and then chose "Open" (circled in blue):

Image

Alternatively, you can click on Show in folder and manually double-click the installer, and then delete the installer after the installation is complete.

If your web browser doesn't provide a quick way to open the installer or go to the folder you saved it in, you'll have to manually go to the location you saved it to in the previous step.

4. Depending on your computer's settings and antivirus software, you may see one or more windows pop up asking if you're sure you want to run this installer. This is a safe, legitimate program, so I recommend proceeding with the install. I saw the following message, for example, and clicked the "Install" button:

Image

5. You should see a small "Installing..." window with a progress bar pop up for a few seconds while it completes the installation of GINA. It may look similar to the following:

Image

You don't need to do anything while the install completes. Once it's finished, GINA should run automatically, and you'll see a window similar to the following:

Image

Congratulations! GINA is installed on your computer.

You still have a bit of setup work to do, though. For example, Adding Characters to GINA and Getting Triggers. Read the other topics/posts in this forum thread for more info!

If you had any difficulties, please don't hesitate to ask in /gu in-game or post to these forums for help. If this walkthrough is confusing, incorrect, incomplete, or could be improved please send a Private Message to Cantus with your thoughts.

Adding Characters to GINA

1. GINA works by watching a file on your computer that EverQuest saves every line of text into. So, in order for GINA to work for a character, you must tell EverQuest that you want it to save all of the text you see when playing this character into a log file.

You do this by issuing the /log on command in-game on the character that you want GINA to monitor.

Logging should stay on for that character on that same computer, so you don't have to re-issue that /log on command every time you play.

It is recommended to also issue the /loginterval 0 command. This makes sure that EverQuest writes any lines of chat directly to the log file with no delay, so that time-sensitive GINA triggers fire right away. Thank you, Phaolin, for this tip!

2. In the GINA program, click the Add button in the upper left.

Image

Note that you have to have the "Home" menu bar selected for this to appear, which it should be by default when you first run GINA.

3. You should now see the Character Editor window. Click on the ... button in the upper right (circled in red):

Image

4. Now you have to tell GINA where your character's log file is. Keep in mind that you must complete step #1 above first. Otherwise, a log file might not exist yet!

Unless you picked a different install location when you originally installed EverQuest, your Logs folder should be at the following location:

"C:\Users\Public\Daybreak Game Company\Installed Games\Everquest\Logs"

You can select the entire line above, copy it, paste it into the "File name" field, and hit Enter. If all goes well, it should open your EQ Logs folder. If it doesn't, you may have EQ installed in a different location. If you need help finding it, ask in /gu or post to these forums.

Finally, select the log file of the character you wish to add, and click "Open":

Image

5. GINA will automatically fill in all of the required information for this character:

Image

There are some optional settings tweaks you can make at this window (details below), but if you're in a hurry, you can just click the Save button right away, and be done adding this character! Repeat these five steps for any other characters you wish to add.

Optional Settings:

There are a few optional settings changes you can make at this point, if you like. You can always go back and tweak these settings later, and these changes will be covered in more detail in the GINA Advanced guide. But, briefly, the optional tweaks you may want to make now are:

• In the Audio Settings section, you may want to select a female voice for this character.

I have two options - "Microsoft David Desktop" (the default) and "Microsoft Zira Desktop" (the female option) - but I've heard that some people only have one option available. If anyone wants to look into why this is or how to download/install alternate Text-To-Speech voices, we could post a walkthrough to the GINA Advanced guide.

Image

• There will be a more detailed guide on how to Fix Mispronunciations, but you can click on the round green "play" button to the right of the Phonetic Name box (circled in red below) to hear how GINA will pronounce it.

If you don't like how it sounds, you can tweak the spelling (or even break it into multiple words) here. Just play around with it, make changes, and click the green play button to hear if it's how you want it.

Image

• You can click the green play button to the right of the Sample box to have GINA read out whatever is written in that box.

If you think GINA is reading it a bit too slow or too fast, you can move the Voice Speed slider (circled in blue above) to adjust, and then click the Sample play button again to hear if you like it better.

I prefer having the slider moved one small increment to the right so that GINA speaks a bit faster. But tweak it according to your preferences!

Automatic Logfile Archiving

When you have /log on (as you should for GINA to work) every line of text that character sees is saved to a log file.

GINA constantly monitors this logfile, and whenever a new line of text is saved to it (by EQ), GINA checks to see if that line of text matches any of the triggers that are set up. But this can mean that your log files can grow to a huge size!

You can easily set GINA up to automatically archive or delete your logfiles to keep them at a more manageable size.

Here's how to do this:

1. Click on the blue button in the upper left of your GINA window. I drew a red box around it in the following screenshot:

Image

2. Click on "Settings" in the menu that pops up:

Image

3. Click on the "Log Maintenance" tab of the dialog box that opens:

Image

^^ Refer to the above screenshot for all of the remaining steps. ^^

4. Tell GINA where you'd like your logfiles to be archived. If you installed EverQuest in its default location, I recommend copying and pasting the following path into the Log Archive Folder box:

C:\Users\Public\Daybreak Game Company\Installed Games\Everquest\Logs\Archived Logfiles

5. Put a checkmark in the Auto-archive log files checkbox.

6. Put a checkmark in the Compress archived log files checkbox. Note: I don't think this feature currently works, but if it's fixed in a future update, you probably want this feature to save hard drive space!

7. Select Scheduled from the Archive Method drop-down box. Note that you could also have GINA automatically archive logfiles when they reach a Size Threshold instead, but I personally prefer archiving on a set schedule (daily, in my case).

8. Select when you want your log files to be automatically archived from the Archive Schedule drop-down box. I strongly prefer and recommend Daily.

9. (OPTIONAL) If you want GINA to delete old logfiles entirely, click the Delete archived log files over X days old checkbox, and select the number of days worth of logs you choose to keep.

Personally, I like keeping old logfiles, so I don't use this option. This means that I may have to manually compress and store (maybe to an external hard drive) old log files periodically to keep my old logfiles from filling up my hard drive.

10. Click the Save button in the lower right of the dialog box:

Image

You're done! Whenever it's running, GINA will automatically archive EQ logfiles (for characters you have set up in GINA) according to your preferences!

Why do this?

There are several reasons why you may want to archive or delete your older logfiles:

• Having a smaller, more reasonably-sized logfile may help GINA performance.

• Having daily or weekly archived logfiles could help you more quickly locate a raid or chat conversation that you want to go back to look at, parse, or share with someone to help create GINA triggers or figure out raid strategies.

• Having smaller (daily archive) logfiles makes them much quicker and easier to run through a DPS or healing parser, or open in a text editor for manual review.

• Deleting old logfiles will help prevent EQ from filling up your computer's hard drive or SSD.

Trusted Trigger Sharing List

Setting up Trusted Trigger Sharing individuals ensures that you quickly and easily get all of the important ES trigger pack updates. Here's how to do this:

1. Click on the blue button in the upper left of your GINA window. I drew a red box around it in the following screenshot:

Image

2. Click on "Settings" in the menu that pops up:

Image

3. Click on the "Sharing" tab of the dialog box that opens:

Image

4. Type the name of a character you want to be able to automatically share triggers with you (without your confirmation or manual intervention) in the Name box of the Trusted Sender List section. Then click the Add link to the right:

Image

Because that annoying Bard, Cantus, is most often the one sharing trigger packs on raids, I recommend at least adding Cantus to your list. I would also recommend adding Rapitiss. Just repeat this step for each additional trusted person you wish to add.

5. Select the radio button for Trusted List in the Automatically Merge Invitations From section:

Image

6. Make sure that both the Enable GimaLink and the Enable Incoming GamTextTriggers Sharing checkboxes are checked:

Image

7. Click the Save button in the lower right of the dialog box:

Image

You're all set! You will now automatically merge triggers shared with you from the individual(s) whose names you added to your Trusted Sender List.

Getting Triggers

Most commonly, someone in-game (often that annoying Bard, Cantus) will put out a chat message in raid chat, guild chat, or even a tell that contains a long string of text that looks something like:

Cantus tells your raid, '{GINA:5da4f7b7-0044-48c7-8b9c-562bf00fd9a2}'

When this happens, if you have GINA running and have properly added your character to GINA, you will receive the updated trigger pack.

If you set the person who's sharing with you as a Trusted person, the triggers will merge automatically. You don't have to do anything. If not, you will have to click over to the GINA program and click the "Merge" button to finish receiving the triggers.

• You may be asked to first delete your old trigger group before receiving the new one. This post has instructions on how to Delete (and why this is sometimes necessary).

• After receiving and merging (which is automatic if the person sharing them is Trusted) your new triggers, make sure that any you need/want are enabled (checked). There is a bug in GINA where this sometimes doesn't happen.

• The whole Eternal Sovereign group should always be checked when you're raiding with ES. But you can (and should!) selectively enable or disable groups within the ES - Class Specific and ES - Optional Triggers groups. This post has more information on the different ES GINA groups.

Note that you will need to go into and re-select the ES - Class Specific and ES - Optional Triggers you want every time an updated pack is shared with you. Thankfully, these groups are less frequently updated than the main Eternal Sovereign group (which you should simply enable in its entirety).

• The links used to share GINA trigger packs in-game are only good for a few minutes. So, the example link provided above (which was at one time valid) wouldn't work if you copied and pasted it in-game.

To help folks pre-load the Eternal Sovereign GINA trigger packs without having to ask someone in-game to share them, I will eventually post a link here to a downloadable pack. Because the trigger packs are currently evolving rapidly with frequent updates, I'm going to wait until the packs are more complete (and less frequently updated) to start doing this.

Class-Specific and Optional Trigger Groups

What are Trigger Groups?

Triggers and groups (folders that can contain triggers or other groups - for neatness/organization) show up to the right of the list of characters you've added to GINA. There is a red box pointing out the three Eternal Sovereign trigger groups in this screenshot:

Image

Trigger groups have a small triangle to the left of their name. If it's a hollow triangle pointing right, like in the following screenshot, it means that group is "collapsed"... the triggers and other groups within it are hidden:
Image

If you click on that triangle, it will turn blue and point down and to the right. This "expands" the group - showing you what's inside it (the triggers and other groups inside it will be "indented" to the right a bit):
Image

Eternal Sovereign has three groups (folders) of triggers that will appear at the "root level" of GINA. The "root level" is what you'd see if you "collapsed" all of your groups as far as they would go.

The first image in this post shows the three Eternal Sovereign groups - "Eternal Sovereign", "ES - Optional Triggers", and "ES - Class Specific".

The Eternal Sovereign Trigger Group:

The Eternal Sovereign group is the most important. It contains all of the essential triggers that we should all be using when on guild raids.

This group should have only triggers that are relevant to all (or at least most) classes and that most people would agree are worthwhile (even if they may be a bit annoying). All of the triggers in this group should be enabled when raiding with ES.

The Eternal Sovereign is frequently updated and shared out. It will be continually refined and expanded as we do new raids, learn more about the emotes in raids we've been doing, and come up with new ideas for general-purpose triggers that would be helpful to - and appreciated by - most people in the guild.

We will check everyone's version of the Eternal Sovereign group before each raid - both to make sure that GINA is working for everyone and that everyone on the raid has the most up-to-date triggers for the raid we're doing.

The Eternal Sovereign group has three main subgroups:

Image

Common - This group contains utility triggers that are relevant to (or at least not annoying to) most. Things like an announcement when your character hit max AAs and is no longer gaining experience.

Group - This contains utility triggers relevant to grouping (like a heads-up if you've been invited to a group) as well as group-event-specific triggers. For example, triggers related to the Kael AoW group event where you have to kneel (duck) and back off in response to emotes.

Raid - Contains important utility triggers relevant to raiding (like AFK Check, Starting Soon, Wiping, Tribute reminders, and other similar triggers). Also contains raid-specific triggers for any current content (and possibly previous expansion) raids.

The ES - Optional Triggers Trigger Group:

The ES - Optional Triggers group contains utility triggers that some people may find useful, but that are not essential to us (if they were essential, they'd be in the main Eternal Sovereign group). It also contains raid-specific triggers for older content that we may not be doing as official ES raids anymore.

It contains three subgroups:

Image

Older Expansion Raid Triggers - Contains raid-specific triggers for older content raids. I recommend un-checking this group unless you are doing an older raid. This will speed up GINA's performance, as the program isn't comparing every line of text from EQ to a list of triggers for old raids that you won't be doing frequently.

Raid Optional Triggers - This contains triggers for current content raids that some people may like and others will hate.

For example, on the ToFS2 (Wedding) raid, there is a special mechanic where your spells won't do anything unless you're closer than 55 ft. to your target when it finishes casting. We made a trigger to alert casters to this. Most spell casters appreciated this, as otherwise they could easily miss that their spells are doing nothing. But it turns out that Rangers can deal archery damage from farther than 55 ft., but were getting angry about the spam from this trigger when their ranged attack spell procs were failing. For that reason, it was moved into the Raid Optional Triggers group where those who want it (spell casters) can enable it while Rangers can switch it off.

Utility Triggers - This group contains a bunch of utility triggers that some people may love and others will hate. None of them are essential for our raids, which is why they're not in the main Eternal Sovereign group that everyone should have enabled. Rather, players can pick and choose which of these optional Utility Triggers they like, and enable just those.

An example of an optional utility trigger is audio announcements of all mez breaks (note that text-only mez break announcements are part of the main Eternal Sovereign group). Some people may like this. Others would find it very annoying and distracting. Because it's in the ES - Optional Triggers group, people can pick and choose which triggers to enable or disable to meet their preferences!

The ES - Class Specific Trigger Group:

The ES - Class Specific group contains utility triggers that are relevant to particular classes (like Cleric or Warrior) and also groups of triggers relevant to categories of classes, like * Mezzers * (Enchanters, Bards, Necros), * Healers * (Priest classes and maybe Paladins?), * Tanks *, * Splash/Group Healers *, * Pet Classes *, and so on.

As an example, a Paladin might have the following groups selected: Paladin, * Tanks *, * Splash/Group Healers *, * Rezzers *, and possibly also * Healers *.

A Magician might choose to have: Magician, * Pet Classes *, and * Ranged DPS *.

This "ES - Class Specific" folder needs a LOT of work. Many classes and categories are empty or missing entirely. I don't think any would be considered done yet. It's very much a work-in-progress. I have a lot of requests for class-specific triggers, but a combination of being a slacker and prioritizing raid-specific triggers that apply to everyone means I'm behind on working on these. I will get to them eventually, though!

If you have old triggers, triggers from someone else, or triggers you've created that you think should be part of one of the three Eternal Sovereign trigger groups, please contact Cantus in-game or send a Private Message to Cantus on the forums!

Selecting Trigger Groups by Character (Checkboxes)

As mentioned in the Trigger Group post, Eternal Sovereign has three different root-level groups of triggers.

While you should have the whole "Eternal Sovereign" group selected (checked) whenever raiding with ES, you are encouraged to selectively enable or disable (by checking or unchecking) subgroups within the "ES - Class Specific" and "ES - Optional Triggers" groups. Here are the two steps to easily do this:

1. You need to first select which character you want to selectively enable or disable triggers for.

When no character is selected, you will not see checkboxes next to each trigger group. It will look something like this:
<img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1-VAP80A ... KxWpUAH2Kt">

But when you click on a character (click anywhere in the green box containing the character's name EXCEPT for the red "stop" circle - that would disable GINA for this character!) there will be a red box around the selected character and you will be able to selectively check or un-check trigger groups just for that character:
<img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1GmcD2uG ... KsTiYC1Mmn">

2. Click the arrows next to groups to expand or collapse them to see their contents. Then you can click in the check boxes to selectively enable or disable groups for the selected character.

Note that individual triggers can't be selected or un-selected. For that reason, I try to put even individual triggers in their own groups so that you can easily enable or disable them.

Example:

As an example, I first clicked on Cantus in GINA to display checkboxes. I then clicked on the triangle next to the ES - Class Specific group to expand it out. I then made sure that subgroups relevant to a Bard (such as * Melee DPS *, * Mezzers * and Bard) had checkmarks but none of the other classes or categories were checked:

<img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1kkhPhvP ... fp1q_dsD2E">

What do the Checkboxes Mean?

<img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1qj9uqJV ... nAWlxaJH3t"> = All of the triggers and subgroups within this group are Enabled for the selected character.

<img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?id=17LqzxS3 ... hwv9qHg2qc"> = All of the triggers and subgroups within this group are Disabled for the selected character.

<img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1qjlV-Yp ... x7NxBkBciU"> = Some subgroups are enabled while others are disabled for the selected character. Click the arrow to expand out the group to see which are enabled/disabled.

Deleting Triggers and Groups

Right-click on a trigger or group. A context menu will pop up that looks like this:

<img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1lMJQNgA ... agXsxdM6W-">

Select "Delete". You will be asked to confirm that you really want to delete this trigger or group:

<img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1U1PbKNc ... TwGow3O2rs">

Click "Yes" to confirm. That's it! You successfully deleted the selected trigger or group.

Why would I want to Delete?

When new triggers are shared, it will add any new triggers/groups that you didn't have previously, and will overwrite (update) any triggers you have with the same name.

But it will NOT delete any triggers or groups you have that are not in the updated pack that's shared with you. It also won't re-name triggers.

So if there were bad or outdated triggers in your old pack, they will still be there when you receive an updated pack. Or if old triggers were re-named, you'll keep your old trigger as well as receiving the new one - potentially hearing multiple messages when that emote fires.

Currently, the best way to deal with this is to simply delete your old trigger group and have the updated one shared with you. This will ensure that you have the latest trigger group without unwanted remnants of old trigger packs hanging around.

Most commonly, when there are major updates to the main (required) Eternal Sovereign root-level trigger group, everyone on a raid will be asked to delete their old Eternal Sovereign group before the updated group is shared out.

There is also a bug (covered in the Troubleshooting post) where you may hear two or more trigger messages for every event. One of the ways to resolve this is to Delete your old trigger pack and ask for it to be re-shared with you.

Keep in mind that you can un-check (disable) old triggers that you may not want/need again. So it there's a chance you may want them again in the future, it's probably best to disable triggers rather than deleting them outright.

Troubleshooting

This is a partial list, and will be expanded in the future. Please check back for additional troubleshooting tips!

I Hear Multiple Triggers!

If you hear triggers two or more times, you're not alone. This is a very common bug.

First, make sure the text that fired the trigger wasn't issued more than once. For example, Rapitiss typically gives the "Wiping" message in raid chat multiple times. If he said "Wiping" five times and you hear "Wiping" five times from GINA, there isn't a problem.

It doesn't always work, but it's worth trying to close and re-open the GINA program. It also sometimes works to click on your character's name in GINA and then un-check and re-check the "Eternal Sovereign" group (or whatever group or subgroup contains the trigger that's repeating).

If none of the steps above work, the surefire way to resolve the issue is to Delete the trigger group that contains the trigger that's firing multiple times and ask for it to be re-shared with you. Be sure to re-check the triggers you want after it's re-shared.

Some Triggers Don't Work

If certain triggers work but other triggers don't seem to fire, check the Chat tab in the Options window (Alt+O by default). Make sure that all relevant chat types are set to "Show".

If something is set to "Hide", I don't think any chat of that type goes to the log file. If it doesn't go to the log file, GINA won't see it and can't fire triggers.

I personally have all chat types set to "Show" except for "Heals (You)" and "Heal Over Time", which are set to "Nonzero Only".

I'm Not Hearing/Seeing Anything

If you don't hear triggers at all, do the following:

• Try closing and re-running the GINA program.

• Issue a /log on command in-game for the character to ensure you're outputting EQ text to a logfile (that GINA watches).

• Make sure you've added that character to GINA.

• Make sure GINA is running for that character. When everything is good, you should see a green bar with the character's name that looks something like this:
<img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1B9qGVVw ... qcp1FkFmf1">

If it looks like this, it means you turned off GINA for that character. Click on the green "play" button to the left of the character's name to re-enable:
<img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1saJCiS8 ... bPQGfLshMw">

If the character bar is green but it has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark, it means that the character is enabled but GINA hasn't seen any additions to that character's logfile since the GINA program was run. Maybe EQ isn't running for that character? Maybe that character doesn't have /log on?
<img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1Wcn6YVp ... THGdPtLp8S">

Trigger Lag - I Don't See/Hear Triggers until Seconds Later

If there is delay (lag) between a line of chat appearing (like an emote on a raid) and you seeing/hearing the GINA trigger, there are several things you can do:

1) Issue a /loginterval 0 command in-game. This makes sure that EverQuest writes any lines of chat directly to the log file with no delay, so that time-sensitive GINA triggers fire right away. Thank you, Phaolin, for this tip!

2) Un-check or Delete any old GINA triggers you may have, as a large number of triggers (and/or poorly written triggers) can cause a lot of GINA lag.

3) Make sure your log file isn't too huge. Refer to the post on having GINA automatically archive your logfiles so that your active logfile never gets too big but so that you always keep your old logfiles if you ever want to refer back to them.
