windows 7 making everquest folder read only

Post by EggbornHatchedrotten »

so I can't save hotkeys, bazaar info or new spell info

I click on the everquest folder, it says files are read only. I uncheck, it says you have to have administrator access to do it, click continue. I click, it makes the changes. I hit ok. As soon I see it again, it's back to read only!

From what I read at the conclusions of the numerous threads I have read, it's not really read only. It's blue.. Ok.. so how do I fix it from being blue then?

One post said he did some kind of reformat of his main drive, and it fixed it. Not sure if I want to do all that. Heck, I still don't have years of iTunes files up and running from the last upgrade, and they are gone again!

Please Help if you have had this problem or know how to really fix it.

It may not be read only, but windows prompts me when I try and delete or move any folder in Everquest. I have to click a continue button to make changes. Would windows 7 be blocking EQ from making changes or saving my information? If I delete my ini file all together, restart my computer and log into the game, Everquest doesn't even create a new ini file for Eggborn. None exist! changes or none!

Solved! I am posting just for other who may have this problem.

It was my UAC. In the search part of the windows button I typed in UAC. That pesky thing that pops up and asks me if I want to make changes to things was preventing Everquest from saving the files. I had to drop the bar on it to stop alerting me when changes are being made. Now things are saving as they should.

Just be careful with turning that off Eggy.

Being notified if malicious software is trying to make changes can be pretty useful these days.

If I leave it on, I can't save anything in eq.

I definitely recommend not putting EQ under C:\Program Files\ on any modern version of Windows due to the whole shadow store issue.

Just move the whole EQ folder to C:\Games\EQ or something and run it from there. You won't need to re-install it as long as the launcher and EQ are in the same place.

This will also avoid problems with copying in downloaded maps etc also.

What's a shadow store? Is that like something Peter Pan would go to?
