Motherboard fried

Post by beornj »

Somehow I blew my motherboard today. Unfortunately it is a LGA1366 socket with a 1st generation i7 processor and there are not to many of those out there floating around. Before I go investing in a new motherboard for an old processor I wanted to find out what the current processors (Intel) are and/or where I might find a good price. As far as I know the video board (PCIe) is still good, memory is DDR and still good, drives, etc, all good. Really should be able to get away with just a mb/processor combo but having a hard time figuring out which. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

I believe that the i7 for intel is still their top end processor. You can go for the i7 Extreme Edition, but unless you HAVE to have the best of the best, those are too expensive for general computing/gaming as they run over $1000 each. I think the LGA 1150(ivy bridge) and LGA 2011. As of right now, I believe Intel maxes out at six core, but AMD has 8 core processing. The six core intel is a little on the expensive side. A quad core i7 should work just fine if the most you do to tax your computer is play EQ. As for where to get a good price, I find that newegg.com has extremely fair prices. They have random sales all the time and usually have a bundle package with cpu/mb combos.

I usually use newegg to checkout the latest filters on the parts I need. Great way to get a quick look at stuff before I research deeper.

There have been multiple 'generations' of i7s, but each one is not a dramatic increase over others. your processor is still pretty good. If you buy new MB and processor, an i5 is good enough, great price point and plenty powerful unless you are doing something extreme. The review below on Tom's hardware has a good ranking of processors by price.

Yes, Newegg is a great site to buy processors.

Thanks guys.

I ended up getting an i5-4640 with an Asus Z87-K mb. It has what I need and with a decent fan I can over clock it. Newegg is where I fuond the best deal as a combo. Good to know I ended up in the right place.
