Gaming Laptop

Post by Kyreth »

Nizzi's laptop has been on its way out for ages now, and with it being on its definite last legs, we're looking to buy a brand new shiny gaming one. As it's been a while since we've really been shopping for a good machine, we don't really know what to look for any more. Does anyone have any suggestions of what a good one would be to pick up? He's probably looking to spend around $1,500, but would be willing to shell out more depending on what the benefits would be.

Also, everyone should yell at him that if he has a new fancy laptop he should come play EQ with us. Slacker.

I hate suggesting hardware because everyone has different likes and needs. So instead I'll point out a couple observations.

Laptops get banged around as they are moved. The warranty should be 3yr at least.

Gaming laptops tend to run hot. Make sure you don't block the ventilation.

High end solid state drives make a HUGE difference in how fast your laptop will start up. Moderate difference in how fast EQ loads.

Make sure you have dedicated nvidia or amd graphics. google "tom's hardware video card review". they have a ranking on various video card models.

The model linked above is a good start.

I love my SSD it is so much cooler and definitely faster start up

If you can afford the higher price and lower amt of memory its the way to go

I've not personally purchased anything from cyberpowerpc.com but I have friends who have and indicated that they've been pleased. Just thought I would toss this out there for you all to look at.

Edit: That system Diss has linked is pretty sharp too.

I use a Asus g74Sx Series. TBH the best laptop i have ever bought. It doesn't overheat and is extremely sturdy. I have had 0 problems with it and got this laptop about a year and half ago. Only problem i had with the laptop is that its on the bigger side. Finding a case to carry it in was a pain. But i have gotten every cent that i paid for this gorgeous machine :).

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?

Both force and object have its origins from the same source.
Everything from the source into the universe is in constant motion, from the seen to the unseen.

An unstoppable force has no walls, no limits to restrain it, and is completely free to make anything happen.

Then the immovable object is a lie to uncover, to discover the truth..THERE IS NO SPOON ;)

Laptops aren't really for gaming, but if you have to...

Clevo, Asus G7 series, bunches of others

http://anandtech.com/bench/Mobile/254

Is a good benchmark. You can search by various benchmarks, you probably want to search for high quality gaming and look through a few. From a price to performance, I'd grab

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834230590

My Notes:
get a Nvidia GeForce GTX 660M or 670M, switchable graphics will help battery life when not gaming, if that's a concern.
SSD is amazing, and cheap enough it should be a must
16GB or more of ram.
Core I5 or I7 doesn't really matter, but i7 and the higher clock speed you go the faster things will get, the less battery life you'll have, but you won't have much anyways.

beyond those, look for features you like and go for it.

Just a note that in my opinioin, the mechanical design on the newest Asus laptops is really top-tier. Up there with Apple if you haven't looked at them recently.

Personally, I never game on a laptop, but I know Nizzi has to travel a lot so that's probably a resonable choice.

I use an Asus G74S series too. I had a quad core desktop and this thing was so close in performance that I don't use the desktop anymore. I have run 5 toons at a time on it with no hiccups or without it getting hot. Everything about it is hyper fast. Adding an SSD to it sometime soon so we'll see how that helps.

you also have the option to mess with alienwares m17

http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/29/39093 ... op-reviews

I looked around at some of the reviews..

I suggest looking at 2013 gaming laptops and reviews to make a valid decision, its quite a bit of money to invest in.

I hope you can do some more research. I only had a few minutes to browse, but those 2 are the ones that really stuck out when I was googling my butt off LOL

Make sure you check the warranty. Normally I don't buy into extended warranty scams but for a laptop that's going to be banged around it may prove well worth it.

Thanks, all, for the advice!! In the end, Nizzi being the random Nizzi that he is, ended up spontaneously buying parts for a desktop which he had me build (it didn't explode in flames yet). He still needs a new laptop, so we'll be keeping all these ideas under consideration.
