got a new laptop , any advice or ?

Post by Zargut »

My old laptop was stolen when I was in california right out of the trunk of my locked rental car in a covered paid parking garage near the wharf in san francisco. So I have been saving and looking for a cheap replacement and finally found and bought one.

Its not the greatest just the greatest for the price..I think? Hope? Its my first HP and it seemed to have low-normal amount of bloatware to uninstall.

It seems a reasonable laptop which, when upgraded to 8 gig ram runs eq 2 box just fine. It has a decently lit 17" screen, better (louder) sound than any other laptop ive owned, and so far seems a really good buy for the money. I easily 2 box on it on full settings and it doesnt lag. Gotta watch the power saving stuff though that can decrease performance.

No the processor and video arent that great nor is the hard drive that big, but again for the money...
A new 17inch laptop for $349.99, comes with one 4 gig ram stick so you just buy one more 4 gig ram stick ($36) and DIY installation is easy under the bottom plate is only 2 screws and it pops right off. I also bought a laptop cooler pad thing for about 30 more bucks since I read HPs can run a little hot when gaming, and of course a little wireless mouse, $20, for it.

My total price was about $486 with tax and etcs.

I know some of you can look this over and tell me of potential problem areas or etc.

With 64-Bit Windows 7, you'll be able to address all 6 or 8GB or RAM so it will be a huge improvement. Just make sure you match the RAM Timing when you purchase a new stick. I would recommend backing up to a disc image somehow before you start getting all crazy custom with her. It's a great idea to be prepared and the software is built in to Windows 7... all you need is an external HDD big enough to handle the image file.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free and quite powerful anti-virus solution that works very well with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Keep your AMD Radeon drivers up to date (nowadays restarts after video driver installs are rare so no excuse :P ) and you'll enjoy what you have. 6 Series Radeon Mobility chips are great for the price. APUs will be out soon so get the good deals now, lol.
