Re instaling windows Vista 32

Post by Warren »

I may be faced with the lovley task of a fresh instal of Vista on my computer due to the fact that my computer has been randomly restarting and none of the hardware seems to be the problem. I am not too good with computers, I know to save the data that I want but other then that I am pretty clueless on what to do. I don;t want to take it in to a shop, I would like to learn how to do it my self as I will get windows 7 when it hits the shelfs so I can get away from Vista. any help would be nice or links on what to do would be great!

Not sure man havent had to suffer thru it yet. Hell i havent even created my restore CD/DVDs yet and i dont think either of my newer boxes came with any. I imagine doing a repair install should be pretty user friendly though. Might wanna check your manufacturers website or Microsoft's pages would probably be better.

Windows 7 betas are quite nice - it's a good choice over Vista, though after SP1 Vista became a usable O/S.

Random restarting is usually hardware, not software. Check your system and application event logs around the times it restarted for any errors and post them up, you may be able to solve your issue without a reinstall.

Edit: I should say, in the case of it being software, it's usually drivers which can be fixed. Would also help to know when this started and what might have changed.

Ahh yes if you haven't looked at your logs be sure to do that. My vista-64 box keeps track of every time windows or an app has a problem. Forget if if's Event Viewer or what to look at it.

I thought I was going to have to do that a few months ago. I downloaded as many of installations of the apps I would need as well as made a copy of all the data I didn't want to forget. I was checking the Dell website, and saw that I had a system restore option, so after printing out that information, I followed the procedure and didn't have any problems.

1000008e with c0000005 is just a bad pointer reference. We'd need more info to diagnose the actual problem since it could be caused by all sorts of things, mostly software but hardware is a possibility if you're getting memory errors.

If it were my system, I'd copy off the data and do a clean install. The repair install is half-way there though and if that fixed it for you congrats.

I'm running the Win7 release candidate on most of my systems now and it's working great. All you need to use it free for a year is an MS Live account (ie: hotmail, Xbox live etc).

You can download an ISO at:

Noircogi beat me to it.

Glad a repair worked, but I'd still backup and fresh reinstall. Windows 7 is not a bad way to go, but take note that at current Microsoft is not supporting an upgrade from the release client currently out to the final version that will hit shelves. You'll have to reinstall once again. Otherwise, a Vista reinstall is pretty easy assuming you have the appropriate media. Just make sure to download any network drivers for your system *before* you reinstall, or be ready with a USB stick and another computer to find them.

it ended up being one of the system fans shorting out , in turn it would restart the computer. I sorta feel bad for the guy at the shop he replaced the PSU and MB and it was still shuttign down before he found that it was just the fan.

Techie rule of thumb (actually applies to a lot of things):

Always check the no-brainer and simple stuff first.

You might be a little obsessed with Halloween if you've ever pulled over on the shoulder of a busy highway, risked life and limb crossing the busy highway on foot only to discover the bright bit of orange plastic you glimpsed out your car window was not a Halloween decoration but a stinkin' Tide laundry soap jug

I was going to suggest checking the fan and power supply.

Glad you got it fixed.

Well its back in the shop lol I went Ld lastnight in Cryst becouse my computer shut down, same stuff that has happend. It rebooted and told me to reset my CPU and MEM frequency in Coms ? and after that would continue to shut it self down randomly. It decided to work again this morning so I decided to leave it on a webpage while I went to work to see if it did say on all day, when I came home it was on a turn on/off cycle. Even after i would unpulg it and it would be just sittign there it would just decided to turn on by itself. There must be an evil sprit in my house or something. Its back at the shop yet again. I think the whole motherboard is fubar or the it has been wired up poorly, but thats commign from a guy that knows next to nothing about computers

My mom's old computer used to do that and it was quick figuring it out was the fan...all covered in dust and cigarette tar. (She smokes obviously.) Took it apart, cleaned it up and good as new.

So I will be takign the computer back in tomorrow... The new plan is to replace the whole case, the tecs at the shop told me that they ran a hardware check and all of the hardware runs correctly. I had it back for about 2 days and I was cookign dinner tonight and the computer decided to turn itself on.. It stayed on the window log in screen for about 5 mins so I decided just to log in to windows about 5 mins after that it turned it self off and started to turn it self on and off on and off. I ended up unpluging the computer and takign all of the plugs out exept the power cable and it was still doing it, tried pluging the computer directly in to the wall instead of the surge protecter and it was still doign it.. It still has the same copy of windows on it, but i don't think that could be an issue.

Main question could be is What could randomly cause your system to load up by itself after you have shut it down? anyways I hope the new case works for me

MB evga 790 i
PS TXW 750 W
GPU gtx 280
CPU e 8400
mem not sure but it was replaced less then a week ago
