VPN question? Hiding Location?

Is it really possible to hide your Geographical location to a computer with VPN?

How do you do this?

There's a game in Japan i'd like to play but it locks out people outside of Japan.

Many years ago there used to a site/service called anonymizer.com or something that would mask your IP. VPN connections have to be made to a server where you have to have credentials ie: username/password. Once you are tunneled into a VPN server you really only have access to shared resources on that server and network. When you establish a VPN connection like to your workplace then your local ISP email and whatnot usually doesn't work while the connection is active.
