found this post about westbug if you didnt have the problem

Post by Whipsnade »

I just wanted to post something with regards to the workaround in today's patch for the so called "west bug" for those that haven't been following the giant thread on the subject.

The "west bug" refers to a rendering problem where when facing certain directions (it usually starts in the western direction, hence the name) no polygons are rendered to the display, only particle effects and the UI. When you are hit with this bug, most of the time you need to completely exit the client to clear the issue.

This problem seems much more prevalent on AMD processors. If you're reading this, you probably use an AMD cpu and have probably seen this problem over the last few months, though it has been around for a long time.

Your own community member Strommmm discovered that disabling certain processor specific instructions for AMD processors (3DNow!) in Direct3D drastically reduces the occurrence of this problem. What is in the patch today should accomplish the same thing as his registry patches, but should only affect EverQuest, rather than all Direct3D applications. Only 3DNow! optimizations are disabled, therefore Intel processors are unaffected. In my testing, any performance drop was negligible, but of course your mileage may vary. A few people that tested Strommmm's registry patches claimed that it caused other adverse problems, but the overwhelming majority did not have any issues, and the "west bug" disappeared or became much less frequent.

If you encounter any problems after today's patch that you suspect might be caused by this change, it can be disabled by placing the following line in your EQClient.ini in the [defaults] section:

DisableWestBugFix=1

This workaround is not the planned long term fix for this problem. But we didn't want to pass up the opportunity to lessen the problem for most people in the meantime.
