Yes, I agree with noircogi. If you had a direct access to DSL, it still wouldn't matter since it's connected to your ethernet card which works regardless of what OS you use. Router is same way.

I think DSL just want their software upgraded to work with Vista to get around their security features and spam you with useless advertising and/or get their help feature to help you with wahtever problem which is pointless anyway. (their help/assistance software SUCKS!)

Think they call it a home2portal or a variant of those words in some order.

It has about 5 ethernet recepts, 1 funny looking usb (square recept whose cord ends with a regular usb plug) and a wireless. Without the yahoo dsl software the connectivity says 100mbs, which is what I get with the DSL loaded. My question comes as: when I connect now, without yahoo installed, is it the sbc service I am paying for already, or is Vista going through another portal, and company, which will be charging me the internet access through their portal? I really can't afford to spend like a dime a minute playing EQ, let alone also paying SBC for the unlimited access. Sort of like an ATM. Use the card anyplace but at one your branch offices and you get a lot of extra fees for other companies routing services.

I tried WinRar and it did not like my zip file either. So I deleted all and used Vistas file transfer program and left the computers on last night with the task to transfer \Sony from old PC to new. This morning when I got up, I just did not feel good enough to look at the damage that may have caused. I'll find out soon enough after work.

I presume were I 20-30 years younger, these episodes would seem more a challenge rather than an irritant.

One thing I did learn while I was away from EQ. My 6 year old grandson can play Concentration nearly as well as I can, as far as remembering what and where he saw the tiles. Now to encourage him to be more organized in his approach, think he can do most excellent. Once he latches on to that, I need find another program to stretch his logic a bit more in an organized and fun manner.

Its a shame now that schools require all students to be the same. Trouble with working at home with him, he gets too bored in school. And BORED in school, for a boy anyway, means detention and threats to put him in a school for incorigibles. I can't afford to send him to an alternative school nor quit my job to home school him. He is already ready to learn to write in paragraphs, and they want to teach him his letters. He should be learning to group his plants and animals into species and phylums, and they want him to draw Empire Penqins.

sigh, so much to teach before the mind closes and they have drained his curious nature.

you would not have internet access if you wasn't paying for someone's service. It don't work like the ATM machines. However, it does depend on whose's service you're already paying. For example, If you are paying for dial up service as well as DSL. then you have to watch and see which one you're are currently connected to.

My mother love her AOL email address and so she is paying for aol service even though I bought cable for myself and had her laptop connected to my router via wireless and she uses my cable service.

I would check the service and see if it says SBC. If that's the case then you are using the service. Yahoo is part of SBC I believe so the only thing yahoo itself offers is the website junk like weather or toolbar, etc. etc.

Regarding Lale's .zip file. Yeah, if you create a .zip bigger than 4GB, it's worthless. No tool can extract it. You could use WinRAR to creat a new .rar archive over 4GB and that would work, but just network copying the directory is much easier.

My kids (and I) loved the PC game "The logical journey of the zoombinis". http://www.amazon.com/The-Learning-Comp ... B00005LBVU If that's still around, it's a ton of fun for all ages. There's also a great non-computer game called "Guess Who?" http://www.amazon.com/Hasbro-4800-Guess ... B00000IWDR which is fun for all ages and helps build logic and memory skills.

Vista itself doesn't have any advertisements, phone dialers, internet services etc. built in. Depending on where you got the PC, that OEM may well have added all sorts of other "value add" stuff to the system. Unless you also have a telephone modem connected or sign up for some subscription web sites, you won't end up paying for anything but your normal SBC DSL connection.
