Do you have google toolbar installed?
The new MSIE beta also has a built-in pop-up blocker.

If you have Windows XP Service pack 2, Internet Explorer has pop up blocking built into it. You need to open it and go to internet options to enable it. You can play with the options in regards to how strict you are, I block everything. You can also go to internet options to a list of blocked sites and enter urls from any popup windows that are annoying you and at least the content is blocked. If you do enter a url in this list, I reccomend you just enter the main part of it and not the whole string (i.e. enter www.spammingsite.com instead of www.spammingsite.com/add/randomstring/3493439879379/).

I suggest you download a program called "Adaware SE." Just google for it and down load the free version. This scans for spyware on your system. It does not run in the background, just run the update for it and run it once in a while. It does not prevent adware, but it detects and removes it.

Another program to download is "SpywareBlaster." Again, just google for it, make sure the spelling is correct as there are some programs with similar sounding names that you do not want on your machine. This program does not run in background, it runs just when you start it. What it does is add sites to the list of blocked sites on your pc (list is referenced above). It does a fairly good job of preventing your computer from going to known sources of spamware.

It is good practice to not click on pop ups or any adds on screens. Stay on reputable sites and click minimally.
