Lag help...

Post by oknagicsar »

my post in general made me come to the realization that i need everyones help w/ this.

lately i've been having real serious problems w/ video lag. it mostly all seems to be isolated in Inka, but that's because i haven't been in really "isolated population" zones other than that. bascially my problem is that i can be running fine but after i either die or 30 min goes by i get so lagged out that i'm getting, literally cause i counted, 3 fps(frames per sec.). it is absolutly rediculous. i can't do a damn thing as you could imagine and i've been getting really frustrated w/ it to the point i just want to say "F it!!"

here is my setup and you tell me why i'm lagging like this...

P4 2.8GHz w/ HT running at 800 FSB
P4S800 Asus mobo running at 800 FSB
1.5 GB DDR2700 RAM(a 1GB stick{in DDR slot 1} and a 512MB stick{in DDR slot2})
256 nVidia GeForce FX5500 8x AGP
20GB HDD(don't remember speed) running my OS on IDE1, 80GB 7200RPM HDD w/ only EQ on IDE2
I have a DSL PPPoE connection(not 100% sure on what speed, but i think it's 1MB) that I run through a 802.11b wireless Linksys router(I'm connected to the router via cable though)

if i have missed anything, plz let me know what info you would need. I am thinking of asking SoE for any ports that i might need to open. my thinking is, that maybe my firewall on the router is blocking it, because i tested it w/o the firewall on on in windows and it still did not work.

I'm smelling the mighty spyware. I would do a check on that.

Microsoft anti-spyware beta deal is a sweet checker and has worked wonders on a PC that registered over 4k in seperate spyware activities, (some people's brothers and the refusal to use internet securities, /grumble.). Took about 3 hours to clean up, but that PC runs great now. Your specs are even higher that that one by far and I've run 2 accounts on it without too much problem.

I have run LavaSoft's Ad-Aware countless times to both my HDD's and it has found minimal(max 30) and mostly just from cookies. so unfortunatly i've ruled this out as well. i just sent and email to sony asking them for any ports that they might suggest openning so i'll be trying that when they reply.

thanks

I would personall say spyware though you do you an evil Lynksys router which have been known to play hell with sony games. They may have cleared up all linksys issues I am not sure. As far as spyware goes that could still be the issue Ad aware is a good program but I have personally used 4 different programs right after one another and they all found different things.

Best of luck with this OK and let us know what you find

i've got the brand new drivers (aug 11)

i've set my settings to everything off in the out of game options, i've also turned off my far clip plane all the way to 0, turned names off, turned spell effects off, i've never had shadows on, and i've also turned dynamic lighting and even the 1.0 pixel shaders off(most of this has been turned off at the same time.

so, like i said, it's weird what it's doing. oh, and to make it even stranger, when i was in txveu w/ everyone and when we first zoned in i was about the 10th or so person in...now keep in mind there was about 60 people compared to the 54 in Inka...my lag was null, i mean, there was nothing, i was like, "SWEET!!!" after about 20 min i died and when i got rezzed back in i was in the same lag as when i'm in Inka...WTF?! then when we were going for the ikaavs and we all had to log out i was again, the 10th or so person back in and my lag was again...null...

so i don't get it...this whole thing is just wacky!!

I'm wondering if virtual memory cache is playing a part in it. you said you had your EQ on IDE1 on 20GB HD. I know that EQ and its associated files such as screenshots can really eat up spaces fast. you should check and see how much memory available allocated to that. If it's low then the video information is eating it up so much that it's lagging you out, I bet.

It happened to me until I doubled my VM cache and I had less lag. not significantly but enough for me to have less lag until it processed all the info and work smoothly after that.

I suspect you got heat issues. Check your temperature while playing. You have a very powerful machine that produces massive amount of heat. You can download some utilities that monitors heat. Or, you can check your BIOS, it may have something there that displays your CPU temperature. CPUs when they get very hot, they will drastically slow themselves down to prevent burning out. Check your fan if it is sufficient enough or if it is even working. Most fans now is automatically triggered by temperature.

Another thing is that when it happens again, check your task manager and see all the processes that are running. It may have to do with some process getting much of your systems resources. I know one issue that if you have Norton Antivirus on your machine. It sometimes would go unstable because rtvscan.exe is utilizing 100% of your processor. This is not a virus, just a glitch on Norton's program. Just stop this process and you should be back in business.

Hope this helps.

I have a program that comes w/ my mobo that watches and reports mobo/processor temps, fans speeds, etc. when running EQ i tend to hover around 115?F on the processor. this of course is not very high so that kind of takes away that idea.

Shroomee told me to look at a website called www.answersthatwork.com and look at the tasks i'm running. the website tells what almost every task in the task window is/does. i found 1 in particular that had to do w/ my video(so extra feature that doesn't need to be running all the time) i disabled it and a couple other things. restarted and it decided not to boot up, lmao. so i had to resort to the blowing it away. just finished patching it w/ sp2 and all yesterday so i'll be getting back to testing tomorrow.

btw, that website is a really neat one, everyone should check it out.
