What is up with the website?

Post by TEFKAA »

We have been running on phpbb 2.0.4 for a long time now. Because we have so many mods, upgrading it is a pain. We have been at risk of defacing (someone using a vulnerability in phpbb to replace files) for some time now, which is why I was working on an upgrade behing the scenes, with structural improvements of our modifications as well. However, it was far from complete.

This morning it was brought to my attention by Soaria and Ylyrra that a defacing virus for this type of forum is going around. I decided that since the forum is most crucial to the guild, upgrading right away was the best thing to do. This means the site should now be safe from this virus (or manual defacing) and the forums should remain available.

Now for the bad news. The current template is too cooky-cutter and not related to an adventure guild. It is temporary. The top menu was something I was playing with but was not meant to be published yet. It is too large in filesize, it doesn't preload and there is no epics link (Sorry Fazin! I really am!). A lot of features are currently unavailable:
  • You can't edit your characters
  • Only default roster is available
  • You can't enter items for the news
  • Reporters can't upload images
  • Links / Hitlist / Item database are not available
This could have come at a better time I'm affraid, since I'm swamped at work because of christmas, and I'll spend the christmas weekend away from home. I'll probably return home sunday night or monday, at which point I'll start adding back the modifications.

I'm sure we'll all manage for a while. And last but not least, have a very Merry Christmas! :)

Athame.

Thanks for all the hard work you do on the site Athame, it's very appreciated.

I must be the only one who doesn't like this layout. Here are the problems I have with it:

Black background: I just don't find this very readable, and of course it's not work-friendly.

The template only uses about 1/3 of the horizontal screen area on my systems, it seems to be a narrow fixed width, after the author indent, it's down to like 1/4 of the horizontal size with the rest of the screen wasted by more black.

I really liked the old layout, but I understand you have to re-do things. If it's at all possible, being able to choose alternate schemes would be really cool. I could get a vanilla black on white and others could get stars and stuff.

Thanks again,

Noir, I agree with your points personally. I prefer light background myself which is why our first phpbb site started out with Aeolus as theme, and I've kept that in all the time. However, a very small group picked Aeolus, and the vast majority picked one of the dark themes (not just because it was default). Fixed width does have a lot of advantages, but I agree that people used to reading small fonts will probably prefer scaling. When this template is done (and it will look differently than this but still bright text on dark background), maybe it is an idea to make a no-nonsense scaling bright theme as an alternative. First the code, then this theme though ;)

As an update: Char editing is back in, and rank & characters show in the post info again. Flags are now editable by officers, so they could add OoW flags or epic 1.5 flag, etc.

Small update:
I've been playing with a client side sortable roster in javascript, but displaying the flags in such a roster while keeping crossbrowser independence proved to be a real challange, and to be honest it's driving me batty CHOOOOCHOOOOO with my socks on! Ahem, anyway, I think I'll do it in flash instead, since it's easier to make things work the same in all browsers that way. Plus I don't need a shitload of images to make text appear vertically in browsers other than IE. Can take a week more depending on how much time I have and wether or not I have another setback (don't expect to, I'm better with flash actionscript than javascript).
