Antivirus Software

Anyone have any recommendations for someone who has no clue about anything with computers?

All I know is that Norton has a habit of crashing EQ, right?

I use Mcafee and exclude the EQ directories. Of course I get McAfee free through my work. Not sure the cost but I haven't had a problem with EQ Crashing.

Microsoft to bundle anti-virus scanning into its monthly security bulletins 12:18PM

Microsoft's next monthly security bulletin will include its first foray into antivirus software since its buy of Romanian antivirus company GeCAD 18 months ago.
Next Tuesday, 11 January, the security bulletin will include the Microsoft Windows malicious software removal tool. Essentially a cumulative patch of the past year's scanning utilities built to detect common viruses such as Blaster, MyDoom and Download.Ject, the removal tool will be updated on a monthly basis in line with the security bulletin. This will be via Auto Update, by manually visiting the Microsoft site or through the Microsoft Download Center for corporates.

Redmond is being cagey about how the tool will be made available in its official form - whether it will ship with the OS or have to be installed separately - and whether it will be free or charged for.

Install Winpatrol www.winpatrol.com to avoid getting spyware. It isn't all that intuitive about removing bad things that you already have, but it is great for preventing it in the first place.

Cnet recommends using PC-cillin Anti-Virus and has for awhile now. They say that it doesn't slow down systems like Norton or McAfee do. Apparently, Norton and McAfee haven't upgraded the core code in their software in years.

I used to be a staunch Norton user, until I found out it was the reason behind my not being able to burn CDs at the speeds the burner was capable of... With Norton, I was able to burn at a maximum speed of 12x. After I removed Norton, Nero reported I was able to burn at a max of 120x (if the burner could actually do that...) Needless to say, I haven't reinstalled Norton. :)

You would probably be OK using anything other than Norton or McAfee or anything you can buy from Wal-Mart for under $10... And there are numerous virus scans online that can be used for free, just another option to consider.

I have our six computers (not all have EQ regrettably) on different versions of Norton but in each case the virus signatures list is updated weekly. The newest Norton 2005 iis on my gaming computer and I did have to disable one protection feature against internet worms in order to get EQ to work. Otherwise, it is flawless operation imho.

We also use Zone Alarm and while it is good at what it does, it becomes very difficult to work with when a new EQ1 *.exe patch is loaded. EQ doesn't let me access ZA 's message very easily. We have EQ2 on one computer and ZA gets along with it just fine.

I use Norton and it works just fine with EQ. It doesn't really slow down the computer too much unless you have no RAM or CPU speed.

Zone Alarm can be a pain like you said when eq is updated and you have to switch over to accept the connection.

WinPatrol works good but it doesn't block all spyware and viruses. It just asks your permission before adding programs to startup or changing your internet explorer home page.

My recommendations are Norton Internet Security and Ad-Aware. The norton does all the virus scanning and has the bult in firewall similar to zone alarm and everything WinPatrol has.

If you want to go the free route, you can get Solo Antivirus or Ewido Security Suite. They both work great to get rid of viruses. Also download zone alarm and winpatrol for their features.

For Spyware, you can't go wrong with Ad-Aware. It's free and definately one of the best. Microsoft is also having open beta on their new spyware program so try to get that if you can. I downloaded it and was amazed at how it works. It works just like norton where it always monitors your computer and tells you as soon as it detects any spyware trying to be installed.

Well, thats the stuff I use or have used in the past. Hope the info was usefull 8)
