Windows 7 / 8

Post by Ylyrra »

So, I'm having some issues with Visual Studio settings. I've been trying for 2 days to figure out what I need to change and have had no luck (basically, it's not starting IIS Express). I uninstalled VS / removed registry keys for settings / config files / etc. At this point, I'm leaning toward doing a clean windows install and just starting over. I haven't done one since I bought this computer so it's long overdue anyway.

My question is this - since this is on the table, should I stick with Windows 7 or go with 8? Cost is not a factor. Via the Dreamspark campus agreement, I can get 8 at no cost since I'm a student.

Pros / cons?

Thanks.

8.1 has much better support for the Windows 7 style UI (unlike 8.0).
It's slightly faster and more memory efficient than Win7.

In general, if you're not using the metro UI or metro apps, the difference is very small. I have Win8.1 on all of my PCs now but I never use the metro stuff.

If you have the option I'd tend go Win8.1 as well.

May as well get the latest OS while you have access to it for free.

I'm also using 8.1 without issue.

I also have a copy of Start8 from Stardock so I rarely have to deal with metro. Best $5 ever.

I would go with Windows 8.1 also. It is very stable for me and works well with everything I ever tried putting on there.
