slow pc

Post by Fendil »

I've been having a ton of issues with my pc lately and was wondering if anyoen knew of any good programs to clean it up and remove things like spyware and malaware if i have any. My everquest keeps locking up when i try to zone and everything just runs really slow. I know some people have said you should reformat your pc but thats a pretty big step for someone like me

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, its free.

Also I use Microsoft Malicious software removal tool:

And/Or the free version of Malwarebytes:

Other things that can help are to defrag, empty startup folder, and make sure theres nothing running in the background.

While there are things you can do I still firmly believe the best thing to do is wipe your machine once every 1-2 years.

For me its about saving time. It takes about 2 hrs for me to gather up the stuff I want to save. Another 4 hrs to do an install and then 4 hrs to load everything back and get things mostly the way I want them .

If you have been compromised then you take a couple hours and try several things to correct the problem. But most of the time they can't or make the system worse, and then your right back to re-installing the OS anyway.

Go to the run prompt, and type in MSCONFIG

go to the services tab

check hide all microsoft services at the bottom, please make sure its checked, otherwise you will break your PC LOL

once its checked you can literally disable everything if you want, some stuff you can leave for your antivirus or apple products

then go to the startup tab, and uncheck everything except what you want to keep up..

that will literally speed up your PC generally about 80% if you have tons of applications and stuff installed.

A few more free tools to help speed up your system.

CCleaner from Piriform. Great to clean out the junk on your PC.

Also, Defraggler is a better hard drive defragmenting tool.
