If anyone is thinking of swapping to Direct TV, I've had it for over 2 years now and I have no complaints. People make a big deal over bad weather and I could probably count the times I've lost single to that on my hand. I did go a couple weeks with shotty signal last month until I realized it wasn't the weather but a branch that kept hanging down and eventually on my dish. I spent 2 mins cutting it down and haven't had an issue since.
Admittedly I miss my cable internet, but I don't miss my old cable bill. As far as TV goes, I kind of like Direct TV better. I don't do movie channels in stead I do Netflix which is better for me. I'm getting better sport options for less money with Direct TV. Which is what I mainly watch.
Direct TV has a promotion running now that if new customers are referred by existing users, both get $10 off their monthly bill. So if anyone is interested on getting it PM me and I'll PM you my account number to subscribe with.

I had DirecTV in Chicago and for a short while in Texas as well. I had great experiences in both locations. The biggest factor affecting your signal quality is dish placement and obstructions. I never had an issue with weather knocking out my satellite dish except when it got covered with several inches of ice due to it's location directly under a roof line. I'd dump a teapot full of hot water on it to melt the ice and I was up and running in no time.
Also I got really good at adjusting my dish. Where it was in Chicago was not a stable location. During the summer if it rained hard, since it wasn't set in concrete the pole would sometimes shift, so I had to readjust the dish. It's all really easy.
In Texas, I had zero technical problems because my dish was properly mounted in a good location.
Also the customer service was always shit, I could only get stuff done if I threatened to cancel half the time. But I usually talked them in to a discount on my monthly bill of 20 bucks or so.
But as far as the quality of service, picture quality, and selection of channels available, I loved it.
