Working the bugs out....
I just got my new computer. It is basically the one cogi recommened, except I went with an i5 instead of an i7 and I only bought 8 gb of ram.
I downloaded + installed EQ and dx9. I load the game, choose server and then get to character select. As soon as I eneter the world, the machine forces itself to restart. I then have the option to start windows in normal mode/ safe mode etc.
It has done this three times in a row, twice before I was actaually in game. The third time I caught a glimpse of the guild hall before it happened.
I haven't tried any other games but I have done web browsing/video streaming etc. I have also watched a part of a blu ray. It seems to be a problem isloated to EQ.
Any ideas?

General EQ stuff:
Set the properties for EQ to run as administrator with XP-SP3 compatibility.
Right click "run as administrator" on the EQ icon to start it.
Make sure EQ is not installed under C:\Program Files but somewhere like C:\\games\EQ.
If it's installed under C:\Program Files you can just move the whole directory to a better spot.
Make sure to start the launcher from that new spot.
Have you tried other 3D games or something like a thermal stress test? Your CPU might be overheating and restarting. Make sure your fans are all hooked up and the BIOS has them set to be thermally controlled. You should be able to hear them speed up and slow down as you run programs.
Look for the "Sandybridge Reviewers Kit" and download that. It has a bunch of nice tools to check out your system.
Edit: One more thing. Where did you install DX9 from? Maybe it's an old/bad re-pack. Always get that from www.microsoft.com/directx then "latest directX downloads for gamers"->"DirectX end-user runtime".

still seems to be doing it. I'm installing SC 2 right now, will see if that runs or if it is an issue isolated to EQ. I am crashing just as I enter guild hall.

Yes, see if it is isolated to EQ or if other games are affected. Try software fixes first, driver updates, disk check, etc. If SW does not fix it and if other games are affected it is likely your graphics card, make sure it is seated properly in slot, also make sure that if it needs an extra power cable plugged into it, that it is plugged in firmly (not all cards do this).
Another possibility is your power supply, when your graphics card sucks down a lot of power.

Aaeadiel
so apparently i can't install sc 2 past 31 % for some reason....trying dragon age now.......this was $1800 + should not be having these issues....
well dragon age crashed as well, so not sure what my next step should be. This means it is the cpu or graphics card?
