DSL vs Cable modem

Post by Iane_Blaidd »

Since we have moved to the middle of no where our cable modem service has been less then reliable. It goes out almost every day for anywhere between 15mins to 3 hours. Yesterday it was going in and out for over 10 hours.

Since we both work from home and do almost all of our work remotely it’s making working a bit hard.

Our current cable service is through a company called Sudden Link. It’s only a 5mb download speed and that’s the max they have. We have an option of getting DSL through Eastex but the download speed is only 3mb and almost double the price.

So my question is who out there has DSL and how reliable has it been for you? I don’t like the idea of only a 3mb download speed but its better then a 5mb one that barely works.

I miss my Cox 20mb download :(

I have DSL and haven't had any issues after the initial installiation. There were water in the lines when they first installed it and they (Verizon) ran new lines at their own cost. I haven't had any problems since. I still prefer Cable over DSL but for the price cost DSL is far cheaper and good enough quality for me. And I routinely box 4-5 either on one computer or now on my PC and Laptop that shares the same wireless network from my DSL.

Honestly, I don't know. It's not the best though, it's part of the standard package and I could pay more for faster speeds, but if I could afford more I'd probably be with cable

Depends on the DSL technology.

Similar to Cable, it also depends on the wiring infrastructure... they use different infrastructures though.

Uverse, for example, is a mix of technologies, but it's transmission is based on VDSL and you can get speeds of 20Mbps+ if the area's infrastructure supports it.

Regular ADSL usually doesn't get much past 6Mbps down, at best, though the standard for ADSL ITU G.992.1 allows for speeds up to 12Mbps down, 1.3 Mbps up, and for ADSL2+M 24 Mbps down, 3.3 Mbps up. Usually if a vendor only offers 3 Mbps, it tells me he is likely running on older ADSL technology, or they just do not have the capacity in the are to provide more than that, and even that 3Mbps is oversubscribed.

Reliability relies on the infrastructure underneath, both technologies can be extremely reliable. However, in most cases, cable infrastructure is separate from the phone/DSLAM infrastructure for DSL, so it's worth a shot.

I would say a 100% reliable 3Mbps connection far greater than a 5Mbps connection.

For my experience, I've had perfect cable, horrible cable, perfect DSL, horrible DSL, and perfect uverse (DSL/Fiber service) depending on where I've lived. One is not inherently better than the other, though a VDSL service would be the best but likely only ADSL is available.

well we have a tech comeing out today to check to see what the problem is. we have had issues since we moved here but it got much worse when they turned the service off instead of ONLY turning the TV off. i really think there is an issue on their end outside. but maybe our modem we used in Vegas is not playing nice with their service???

and sadly DSL here is nearly $110.00 a month where as cable is only $39.99

well i finally have my answer to our connection issue

Sudden Link limits the amount of data you can download and upload per day. once you hit your limit it cuts you off. and since we were $1 last month and #2 so far this month that is why we are having issues. looks like i need to go buy a business account even though my contract says unlimited
