Laptop help

Post by Twinkeltoes »

I'm looking to buy a Lap Top for school. But let's face it, it'll more then likely be used for EQ to eh. I've never owned a lap top before, and the best deals seem to be online. But I don't know what i'm looking for online for Lap top needs. Especially when it comes to battery life, and graphics etc.

Anyone able to help me out on what specs I should be focusing on pls. Brands to look for and more importantly brands to stay away from.

Laptops still require specific priorities.

Do you want to game on it? (handle eq, okay)

Do you need battery life? What is reasonable to you (3hrs, 10hrs, what?)

Do you care about weight? (less than 4 lbs, 4 to 6 lbs, what?)

Read these, they'll give you a good idea:

14 inch and smaller http://www.anandtech.com/show/3822/lapt ... nd-smaller
14 inch and larger http://www.anandtech.com/show/3795/mobi ... books-dtrs

Ok, I was going to wait, but I said fuck it and splurged today. I went to Best Buy and bought a HP Pavilion dv7-4165dx notebook. It has:

*HP MediaSmart
*AMD Phenom II Triple-core Mobile Processor N850 (2.2GHz, 1.5MB L2 Cashe)
*17.3" Diagonal HD+ HP BrightView LED Display (1600X900)
*640GB (5400RPM) Hard Drive
*4096MB DDR3 SDRAM (2DIMM)
*802.11 b/g/n WLAN
*Blue-ram ROM with LightScribe SuperMulti DVD+/- R/RWDouble Layer
*9-Cell 93WHr Lithium-Ion Battery
*AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Graphics with 128MB Display Cashe Memory
*5-in-1 Digital Media Reader
*HP TrueVision webcam
*Fingerpring Reader
*Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

cost was $760

I think that should be enough for what I want to do at a decent price. I saw a couple other good ones for less money but the screens were smaller (14.5") Figured for gaming I'd like to have the bigger screen. Do you guys think this is a good price for what I got or are there better deals out there. I'm not going to open this one today until I do a little more research to avoid the 15% restock fee if I decide to bring it back, but unless i'm missing something and I'm overvalueing the graphics card I think it should be fine.

I looked into it and even called the company up since the coupon code wasn't working

Compairing the 2
-It's $139 more then what I spent on the current HP.
-The proccessor goes from tri core to quad core which is an upgrade; 2.2GHz to a 1.73 GHz is a downgrade; 1.5MB L2 Cashe to 1333MHz 6MB i'm not sure which is better other then quad core
-RAM goes from 4GB to 8 GB upgrade
-Screen goes from 17.3 to 15.6 downgrade
-graphics card is a 4250 128MB vs a 5730 1GB not sure which is better
-Batter goes from a 9Cell with about 5-6 hour play time vs 6cell 2-2.5 hours play time, big downgrade
-Blueray player to just DVD player downgrade.

Not sure if the pros outweigh the cons, especially for the extra price.
