Has anyone has to set up a VPN before?

Post by Iane_Blaidd »

i tried setting one up for one of our clients last night. thats why i went LD on first event it killed my regular connection and i had to reinstall.

i got a 6 page document listing exactly how to set it up i got done and it said i was connected just fine but i could not see their desktop.

i usually use gotoassist which we pay a ton for yearly for this reason but this client doesnt feel its secure enough. thought they emailed me the directions my user name and password; yeah i know how ironich that is :P.

i was hoping someone knew something i didnt about maybe a missing step.....

When you use a VPN, typically, all traffic is then directed through that VPN, that is what caused your LD more than likely. Unless it is a split tunnel which is not really the secure way to go. In any case, if the VPN connection really completed, then you should be able to access whatever resources you are then allowed to access at the remote end. If the VPN is established, it would sound like the address you recieved does not have access to the remote machine. The company would have to allow that access specifically or through your user profile typically. VPN's are really just negotiated access allowances where traffic is encrypted, directed to a tunnel endpoint, then decrypted. It is a good way to acess private networks also.

Iane-

If you are using the "canned" MS VPN client, launch it as you would to kick off the VPN session, but before connecting, do the following:

Image

Click on the Networking tab, highlight Internet Protocol item and click the Properties button, then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the box next to Use default gateway on remote network is unchecked.

This will allow for access to both networks simultaneously. But as Beo said . . . not the most secure way of doing things. Make sure you trust the far side of the VPN and you are running AV, etc. I am sure you are, but it is worth mentioning none the less.

Good luck,
