Computer slow at startup, a SVCHOST.exe

Post by Alyanaa »

Recently my main system has been acting odd, when I startup it takes FOREVER to open anything up and I get "not responding" messages when I finally get them up. The few programs I have on autostart wont start until I close that file out.

I use CA antivirus and have scanned, with no virus detected.
I used PC Pitstop optimize and done all the optimizations.
I have looked to see what is hogging all the CPU up and its one of like 9 svchost.exe taking 50% of CPU and 71K of memory. Microsoft gives a CMD to use, but following their instructions, it doesnt work.

How the #@$% can I find out what lameass program is trying to overhog my computer???? After that, how can I find the person who made it so I can cut out their spleen, left eye, and lower intestine with a rusty spoon???

That happened to Ant's before we upgraded. Never figured it out. Let me know if you do!

Though it is a svchost file hogging resources, it does not mean that it is what is wrong, it could be waiting on some other process or looking for something.

Good chance you are going to need to do a complete windows reinstall, but maybe not.

Keep searching the Microsoft web site and google this, you may end up with some help.

If not already done, do complete disc check incluidng looking for bad sectors. (probably not problem).

It could even be a hardware problem. Weak power supplies can cause some really flakey problems you would never suspect to be a hardware problem.

Thanks Whipsnade, that program gives it some more identification. It is a service host app that has something to do with Microsoft update. I have gone to the Microsoft update, and done all the requied and a couple of optional ones.

This problem started about the time I deferred Service Pack 3 install. I have since installed, but still have problems on startup. Even after I manually stop that file, I still have some slight delays. I think CA antivirus is running sometihng, but it doesnt show much on task manager.

We have run into this a few times in my work environment. It was Windows Update taking forever once we used a breakdown tool like what Whip linked. Temp fix is to "stop" it, but you really aren't resolving the issue.

Not sure of your setup, but ours was always related to the WSUS server pushing an unauthorized update by mistake (Human error usually.) If you are not in a AD environment then I would look at your recent updates. (Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> check mark the "show updates" and can sort by date to see everything recent.) Check the most recent ones and think about removing them one at a time and checking performance post reboot. Just because microsoft says you should install doesn't mean it will help your system. We don't approve every one and in fact only use about 50% of their non security updates. Security ones sure, but they sometimes roll app ones that aren't really beneficial to your setup.

Not sure if that helps, but I have been in this boat when 800 machines are unresponsive and it sucks hard. :P

It has something to do with my sound card. There is some Audio on high definition bus that isnt recognizing. I have tried to force and update with not luck. I have re-installed my sound card drivers and still no sound. At least now the system SHOWS a sound card.

Not sure what else to do....

Sorry for lack of details, but when I built current PC a couple months ago, I had a few issues with installing the audio due to two choices of audio, the high definition and the older one (forget acronym atm).

My issues did not involve any Windows services, but it took a few tries for my audio to work. I had to set up PC with the old audio format setting (in Bios) and install driver then change settings to HD audio. I forget the whole sequence, but it was a bit odd and I do not think it was suppose to be that way.

Also, if y ou are using and add in Audio card, make sure any audio capability built into MB is turned off.
