I plan on rebuilding one of my computers and have not been tracking the latest processor and mother board trends and I am not sure what is a good performance/price in current market. The sticking point is that I want one with an AGP graphics slot and it seems that the motherboard market has moved on to the new express slot.
Everything in the machine I am rebuilding is fairly new and high quality and changed out in last year. The system has been flakey as of late and think either the Athlon 1800 processor or the MB have issues.
Current system:
Windows XP
Antec 450 watt Ppowersuplly (it is very new, good one paid $ for)
Standard case, form factor
AGP graphics card.
1 gig memory (forget speed, but two 1/2 gig DDR memory, mismatched)
160 gig HD
I am good with rebuilding computers and setting them up, just have not bought a MB for home use in a while so the curent state of market is unknown. Preference is to not have to buy a new graphics card and push cost up the cost of this upgrade. I am fond of MSI brand MBs and really like the on=line software update features they have, but most of the mainstream MBs have this now.
What is a Good Motherboard/proccessor combo with AGP slot?

Yeah, anything with AGP is at least a 2-year old design at this point in time.
I hope you bought an nForce MB!

Lessw the sales man
ok as much as i hate AGP as compared to PCI-E16 theirs 1 good solution for u
Get a board thats got both AGB and PCI-e
Foxcon has the 915PL7AE-8EKRS
http://www.foxconnchannel.com/EN-US/Pro ... -gb0000077
MSRP = $119
Supports compatible Intel? Socket775 processors
800/533MHzFSB
Dual channel DDR400/333x2DIMMs
1xPCIex16, 1xFGE, 1xPCIex1, 3xPCI
1xIDE + 4xSATAI/150
IEEE1394a
7.1channel HDA(Realtek)
GbE LAN(Realtek)
8xUSB 2.0ports
this way u can put your existing AGP card in now and still upgrade to a nice newer card later with out changing boards
the board would use your exising HDD's , and both memory sticks and your powersupply should work fine
the board supports all P4 cpus Except the Duel core P4's
so Processor prices would be about $100 to $300 depening on speed
65-nm Technology
661 2 MB 3.60 GHz 800 MHz SL94V $415
651 2 MB 3.40 GHz 800 MHz SL94W $199
641 2 MB 3.20 GHz 800 MHz SL94X
631 2 MB 3.00 GHz 800 MHz SL94Y $99
-- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
all that being said...
going with a current 945 Duel core CPU is still going to be a lot faster in games
Foxconn 945P7AA-8EKRS2 -- 945 MB MSRP = $139
http://www.foxconnchannel.com/EN-US/Pro ... -gb0000090
Intel Duel core 945 3.4GHz 800mhz CPU and fan $309
http://www.intel.com/products/processor ... /index.htm
e-GeForce 7600 GT KO 256MB DDR3 w/EVGA fan $220
http://www.evga.com/products/moreinfo.a ... &family=22
BUT...
all Duel core CPU MB's require DDR2 witch you said u have DDR1 so you would have to get new Ram
2gb DDR2 (2x 1gb sticks and heatsinks) = $300
* Prices are avraged or close to what i saw online you can probibly get slohgjtly better if u look around a bit
i also carry these items in stock where i work and could ship them to you if u get with me and i have better prices than what i listed but i listed MSRP for all for comparison

System built, runs great. Few glitches, LAN port on MB would not work, but finally up, running, and patched. Blew a lot of the weekend, but high speed connection makes this stuff soo much faster.
MB has Nvidia NForce, went with MSI since all the PCs in my house have MSI boards, and I have built a few with this brand.
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_sp ... F&class=mb
Went with EVGA GEFORCE 7600GT. 256 MB PCIE graphics card.
I seldom buy the very high end, but I do buy good midrange stuff. I think with current market, the single processor AMD Socket 939s are a good value. The dual core stuff is a bit pricey for me.
With 1 Gig RAM (PC3300), this system is amazing. Logged on EQ, ran around pok with alll effects to max and ran smooth, lagless, but not many people on at the time. (took about 3-4 hours to download all of EQ, all expansions not too bad, had darn dxd file missing bug, but the 50 meg direct x patch file downloaded almost instantly, fast machine, fast connection.
[Watch the MSI website, it sets some sort of record for trying to load cookies on your computer. I have 3rd party cookies blocked (with prompt) and I actually had trouble leaving page due the flood of pop up messages prompting me about cookies. If you sit with page open, they build up]

The new 3DMark top 20 was just released. 17 of 20 are the EVGA board (actually built by NVIDIA) I listed above. 2 more are also NF680 (Asus).
NF680 has 19 of the top 20 and all spots above 19. All above #19 are also GeForce 8800GTX systems.
