Did you restart after you installed it and run dxdiag to make sure it installed correctly?

Took me 3 times downloading to get this to load :(
here is how I did it: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads
Open file DirectX and download DirectX April 2006 REDISTRIBUTE (was the third file on list)
Saved to EQ file then Open file and RUN
Reboot computer
Did the same thing on 3 computers and all are working fine now :D

THANK YOU for the help

don't ahve to reboot computer.

I installed the dx9c just fine and I was able to get in EQ np.

Here's a list of steps that may help you

The microsoft site genuine advantage thing may be the bottleneck. So when you install the activex control thing. Wait a few min. If you get any popup or whatnot. Try the alternate method link. If it don't give you the code to validate. Go back and install the activex again. Keep trying until it let you download what you need.

Once you download the redistru file (the one that say april 2006 or as such.) It's a big file. about 52mb. do this while you're doing laundry, cook dinner, whatever if you don't have DSL/Cable modem. Once it's downloaded. here's the steps

Step 1.) Create a file on the desktop. title it dx9c or whatever.

Step 2.) Download the file into that folder. Once that's done. Open your dx9c folder.

Step 3.) look for the DX Setup .exe and Open it.

Step 4.) let it do it thing.

Step 5.) Do it again one more time. (for some reason the 2nd time actually install more files /shrug)

Step 6.) you're done. Go play EQ.

Even simpler method:

Browse to www.microsoft.com/directx
Click "Get the Latest DirectX Here"
Put in your speed and language, click continue, click download, click run

I didn't even have to reboot on the two systems which were running the older version of DX9.

The redistributable does not require WGA ;)

winxp

If you just goto the microsoft website and search for directx it should install automatically for you. However, if you have a bootleg version of winxp with a bad serial number you have to type in that long http address that eq posted to get the redistributable version. Make a new folder where you keep your backups and download the redistributable into it then run the setup file inside the directory where you downloaded the files too. I can't remember if the file is zipped. If it is you can just unzip it into a new temporary folder and then run the setup file in the extracted files in the new temporary folder. You can then delete the extracted files because you already saved the compressed zip file where you keep your backup files.
